Bar del Tio – This bar is reminiscent of something you would find in Brooklyn and definitely stands out against the more humble bars in Valpo. They have herbal “mixologist” type drinks and food options such as pulled pork sandwiches. They have a great ambiance and great service and it’s conveniently located close to clubs.
La Terraza (Terazza Bellavista) – This is one of the few places where you can go and dance and feel comfortable. It’s well lit and there’s a huge dance floor where they play latin music. Upstairs there is a smaller roof with techno music and an awesome view of the ocean. My recommendation would be to do a previa, though, and get your drinks in before you go here as prices can be steep.
Ride the Trolley – I would often take the trolley to my friend’s house when I lived in Valparaiso. It’s spacious and more pleasant than riding in micro and feels like you’ve time traveled a little bit. It goes slower than the micros, too, so you get to take in the views of the streets and graffiti. It’s also cheaper!
Walk Cerro Alegre At Night – Alright, so this is the most touristy place ever, BUT that’s an advantage because it makes it safer (muggings are very common at night in valpo). Going through the maze of cerro alegre and walking all the different streets at night is so calming. There’s less people, there’s an occasional musician playing, and the city looks incredible with the lights shining all over the hills. It’s one of my favorite things to do.
Arrayan – A great way to keep the fun going on a Sunday is to go here. They have dance parties on their amazing terrace that overlooks the ocean and city. Watching the sunset with some friends and a few drinks here is a superb way to end the weekend.
Parque Cultural de Valparaíso – This is a beautiful park that actually used to be a prison. They remade the prison cells into a collective art museum and they also constructed a very modern event space. They often hold concerts on the lawn, theatre performances, and have artisanal markets on the weekends. I saw a Portuguese music & poetry performance here once and they often have all types of various artists visiting.
A Trip To The Vineyard – Okay, so this is a little outside of Valpo, but making a trip to Casablanca is basically a requirement if you visit Chile and some of my best days have been spent getting tipsy in the middle of the gorgeous valley that exists between Santiago and Valparaíso. There are various vineyards to choose from and you can get there by bus or car.
Patio Volantin – This place is as bohemian and as “Valpo” as you’ll get. It is a community space that was created with recycled materials. The doors are covered in knitted material and it is a place where they often have vegan onces (tea time) and concerts. It is a project that is in progress and the community is adding onto it and making it better together. You can find this place at the top of Subida Ecuador, right after La Panaderia Campezana.
Eat at El Mercado – This is one of the best places to get good food for a reasonable price. Look through the restaurants online beforehand so you know which one you’d prefer to go to, otherwise the hosts will be like vultures as soon as you walk in there. Definitely get machas a la parmesana while you are here.
